Supervisor Interview
Assignment Overview
In this assignment, you will present your findings from interviewing a supervisor. Note that you may include lessons learned from this assignment in your Personal Supervision Philosophy Paper, which you will submit in Unit 9.
The most effective way to test theories, principles, and concepts related to a skill such as clinical supervision is to actually apply them in a work environment. This assignment is designed to provide you with access to the role of clinical supervision in a real working environment.
Assignment Instructions
This assignment has two steps: the interview and the analysis. You will submit a 4–6 page analysis that incorporates the information from your interview with the best practices from the literature.
Step 1: Interview
For Step 1 of the assignment, conduct an interview with a counseling supervisor.
Contact a counseling supervisor either in your work setting or at an organization where you might like to work in the future.
Tell the individual that you are a doctoral student in counselor education and supervision taking a course on the theories and principles of clinical supervision.
Ask the individual if he or she would be amenable to discussing his or her experiences as a supervisor with you.
Explain that his or her experience will help you understand how supervision models and theories actually apply in a real work setting.
For this conversation, ask the following questions, as well as some of your own:
- How long have you been a supervisor?
- How did you come into this role?
- What do you like best about supervising others?
- What do you like least?
- What preparation, training, and/or coursework have you received to help you in your supervisory role?
- What are your administrative procedures and responsibilities related to supervision?
- How do you balance your clinical and administrative supervision duties?
- How would you define the role of the supervisor?
- What do you think are the most important characteristics of a good clinical supervisor?
- How would you define the ideal model of supervision?
- What are the theoretical tenets that underlie your model?
- How does this ideal compare to your current and past experiences as a supervisor?
- How do you incorporate the latest technology into supervision (using tools such as FaceTime, Skype, and instant messaging)?
- What are some ethical dilemmas of using this technology, and what are some practical recommendations for combating these potential pitfalls?
Step 2: Analysis
For Step 2 of the assignment, research best practices on what makes a good supervisor. How does a supervisor develop those characteristics? In your personal experience, what style of supervision do you think you will employ? Support your positions with at least five reference sources. Use these readings to help you reflect on the information you gathered in your interview.
Address the following in your analysis:
- Create a portrait of a clinical supervisor.
- Explain administrative procedures and responsibilities related to supervision.
- Explain supervisor characteristics needed to be a successful supervisor.
- Apply theoretical frameworks and models to clinical supervisor’s view of an ideal model of supervision.
- Analyze the ethical considerations when using technology in supervision.
- Synthesize best practices that align with academic literature.
